Dežru Spec-R • Track Focused 05–14 Ford Mustang Coilover System

Professional-level suspension control for the S197 Mustang.

The Spec-R lowers the Mustang by approximately 25–50 mm while delivering true 3-way damper adjustment through fully inverted dampers and external reservoirs, providing the platform control, thermal stability, and tuning range required for aggressive road driving, HPDE, time attack, and dedicated track use.

Dežru Spec-R Coilovers – Ford Mustang (2005–2014)

Engineered for drivers who demand complete chassis control.

The Dežru Spec-R represents our highest level of suspension performance for the S197 Ford Mustang. Developed around the unique requirements of the Mustang's front MacPherson strut and solid rear axle architecture, the Spec-R combines fully inverted monotube dampers, external reservoirs, and true 3-way adjustment to provide the control and consistency required for serious track use.

Every Spec-R system is developed using vehicle-specific data including vehicle mass, weight distribution, suspension motion ratios, axle configuration, and target ride frequencies. The S197's substantial front mass and relatively high rear unsprung weight require a fundamentally different approach than a conventional independent-rear sports car. Spring and damper specifications are therefore selected specifically around the characteristics of the Mustang platform.

Unlike conventional coilovers that combine compression into a single adjustment, the Spec-R features independent rebound, low-speed compression, and high-speed compression adjustment. This allows body motion, transient response, tire loading, and impact absorption to be tuned independently, providing the level of control necessary to optimize the chassis for different tires, circuits, driving styles, and surface conditions.

Key Features

  • Fully inverted monotube dampers for exceptional rigidity, reduced damper flex, and precise suspension response.
  • External reservoirs with true 3-way adjustment featuring independent rebound, low-speed compression, and high-speed compression control.
  • Digressive piston technology providing strong low-speed chassis support while allowing controlled compliance during higher-speed suspension movement.
  • 550 lb/in front and 275 lb/in rear HyperCo springs, selected specifically around the weight distribution and solid rear axle architecture of the S197 Mustang.
  • Fixed-length damper bodies with 25–50 mm adjustable lowered ride height to maintain usable suspension travel and proper damper operating range.
  • CNC-machined aluminum mounts and application-specific hardware for precise fitment, reduced weight, and long-term durability.
  • Hand-built and shock dyno verified to ensure matched damping characteristics across the complete suspension system.

Performance Character

The Spec-R gives the S197 Mustang the platform control needed to exploit modern performance tires on track. Brake dive is substantially reduced, steering response becomes more immediate, and body movement during rapid transitions is controlled without relying on unnecessarily extreme spring rates.

At the rear, special consideration is given to the Mustang's solid axle. Because the wheels, axle housing, differential, and associated hardware represent significant unsprung mass, simply installing an extremely stiff rear spring can reduce the axle's ability to follow uneven pavement. The Spec-R instead combines a carefully selected rear spring rate with sophisticated digressive damping to control the chassis while allowing the rear tires to maintain contact with the track.

The external reservoirs provide increased oil and gas volume as well as improved thermal management, helping maintain consistent damping during extended sessions. As damper temperatures rise during repeated high-speed laps, the Spec-R is designed to maintain predictable behavior rather than allowing chassis control to deteriorate as the session progresses.

Independent adjustment of rebound, low-speed compression, and high-speed compression gives the driver extensive control over the Mustang's behavior. Low-speed compression can be used to manage brake dive, roll, squat, and platform response. High-speed compression controls the suspension's reaction to curbing, pavement joints, bumps, and other rapid wheel inputs. Rebound adjustment allows weight transfer, transient balance, and the rate at which the chassis settles after suspension movement to be fine tuned.

Why We Recommend 550 lb/in Front & 275 lb/in Rear

The S197 Mustang presents an unusual suspension tuning challenge. Its relatively heavy front end requires substantial spring support during braking and cornering, while its solid rear axle carries considerably more unsprung mass than an independent rear suspension. Treating the front and rear of the car identically would compromise mechanical grip.

Our 550 lb/in front and 275 lb/in rear track-focused spring package addresses those differences directly.

The 550 lb/in front springs provide the support required to control the Mustang's front mass under hard braking and high lateral load. They reduce brake dive, improve steering precision, and provide a stable aerodynamic and alignment platform without requiring excessive low-speed compression damping to compensate for an undersprung front end.

At the rear, the 275 lb/in springs provide strong chassis support while retaining enough compliance for the solid axle to follow the track surface. This is particularly important over curbing, pavement transitions, and rough braking zones where an excessively stiff rear spring can cause the axle to skip across the surface rather than allowing the tires to remain loaded.

This combination:

  • Provides strong front-end support under threshold braking and sustained cornering.
  • Reduces body roll, brake dive, and acceleration squat.
  • Improves steering response and transient chassis control.
  • Maintains rear mechanical grip despite the S197's substantial rear unsprung mass.
  • Allows the solid rear axle to remain composed over curbing and uneven pavement.
  • Provides an effective baseline for modern 200-treadwear and track-oriented tire compounds.
  • Leaves meaningful tuning authority to the independent high-speed compression, low-speed compression, and rebound circuits.

Rather than using excessive spring rate to force the chassis into submission, the Spec-R allows the springs and dampers to perform their respective jobs. The springs establish the platform while the 3-way dampers control how that platform moves.

Combined with fully inverted dampers, external reservoirs, and true 3-way adjustment, the result is an S197 Mustang suspension designed to remain precise, predictable, and adjustable throughout sustained high-performance driving.
